Container home
« on: October 12, 2015, 01:20:54 PM »
First of all thanks for the Construction forum,

I would like to know if one can build and utilize a Shipping container as home?

are the containers available in scrap/sale?

Has anyone yet done some building work using containers?

Regards

Hi,

I have not done but enquired a bit during my research.

There are some who use old shipping containers for the container home building and others use brand new containers in a variety of sizes built for the purpose. With insulation and interiors, container homes do look as good temporary solutions and are often used for construction sites as make shift dwellings. I keep seeing some under the metro work in Hyderabad.

I have had some quotes from a few suppliers a while back and a  20'x10'x8.5' container with roofing, flooring, wall Insulation, inner panelling & provision for Electrical items was in the range of 2.8 - 3.0 lakh Rupees inclusive of taxes. Civil work and transportation was additional.

This does not appear to be cost effective over traditional construction, unless mobility of the structure is of importance.
