Building a house
« on: August 05, 2015, 11:52:20 AM »
Hi,

I am planning to build a small house to serve as a farmhouse at my farm and am evaluating plans and options. I am putting down thoughts on each area of the planning and findings from my research in a few linked threads.

Essentially, my intent is to have a small house built that provides a place to stay for me and a worker family, along with having adequate storage area. The construction should be as economical as possible, absolutely critter-proof, functional, safe, aesthetic, ecofriendly and quick to build.

I am far from being an engineer and all ideas and thoughts are more than welcome.

Roofing
I have started with the roof since I believe the type of roof and its load determines the whole structure.

Dear Dr Chandra sir, Recently I have constructed my farm house in my land. It consists of 2 Worker quarters, each of 10 x 12 ft bed room, 6 x 5 ft kitchen and one bath of 6 x 4 ft, with AL blue roof sheet  on steel square/round pipe and with 8 inch cement bricks & cement mortor.uction

One stores of size 20 x 12 ft, like above construction. A packing hall of size 10 x 30 ft, like same  above construction.

Like above ,i have constructed one bed room ,one kitchen, and bath room and hall, in total of 20 x 20 ft size.

Approximate cost will be around rs 550/- per sft for above construction.

g.p.rao,  farmer

Dear Chandra,
can you please clarify / decide on few things before starting?
- are you going to build the first floor on top in future?
- do you need a flat roof or a sloping roof ( based on the intended use)?
- what is the kind of roof the traditional houses have in the region. please look at the old houses, not the newly constructed RCC slab and frame houses.
this is your starting point, let us take it up from here.

in fact the geography, soil condition, climate in your region will be deciding factors in choosing type of construction materials and technologies.
