Steel and Metal

Metal and steel are terms that are normally used in a similar capacity more often, but actually they are very much different from each other. Metal in majority of cases appears a popular construction material, which apparently seems hard, but you only see one side of the picture. It will not be wrong to mention here that basic difference between steel and metal is normally ignored as people generally consider it a form of metal. Regardless of the fact that steel and metal are used in a similar capacity there are technical differences present in both, which should be given high grade importance in various kinds of construction projects.


Metal can be best defined as a material that is conventionally hard, shiny and opaque and is known for having great thermal and electrical conductivity. These kinds of substances are commonly malleable so you can give them any kind of desired shape without getting the cracks or damages. In the periodic table 91 elements are metals others are known as metalloids and nonmetals.


Steel is actually an alloy that is made by mixing iron with carbon in varying concentrations. In simple words steel is not a pure element it can be best described as the variation of metal. It is made using iron, which is a metal, but carbon has also been included which is not a metal. For making steel impurities such as sulfur, silica and phosphorous should be taken out of iron ore prior to carbon’s addition. The most prominent benefit of steel is that it’s much stronger than iron because of this reason it is extensively used in bridges and cars. Steel is also a prominent part in the construction of ships, guns, skyscrapers, trains and different kinds of surgical equipment.
